The Center for Language Education and Cooperation (hereinafter referred to as the CLEC) of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China has researched and written the Framework of Reference for Chinese Culture and Society in International Chinese Language Education (hereinafter referred to as the Framework of Reference), which defines and specifies the contents and goals of teaching Chinese culture and contemporary national conditions to provide a framework of reference for cultural courses, classroom teaching, textbook compilation and assessing students’ cultural competence in primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities, Confucius Institutes (classrooms) and other Chinese-teaching institutions at home and abroad. As the first framework of reference of its kind used in international Chinese language education, the Framework of Reference intends to provide a comprehensive, systematic, and objective introduction to Chinese culture and contemporary society and make contributions to promoting exchanges and mutual learning between civilizations, enriching the world’s cultural diversity, and building a community of shared future for humanity.
