On December 26, 2008, a Chinese naval task force comprising three ships set off from a naval base in China and headed for the Gulf od Aden and the waters of Somalia. It ushered in a series of ocean-going escort operations. By December 25, 2009, the first anniversary of the start of Chinese naval escort operations, the Chinese Navy had dispatched three task forces, providing escort protection to 1,329 vessels in 149 groups. It had timely rescued 15 vessels being chased and attacked by pirates. It has become a major force in safeguarding security in waters of the Gulf of Aden, and has won great admiration and praise in China and overseas.
