'Cities of China' is a new series published by CIPG's specialist foreign language publisher, Foreign Languages Press. There are more than six hundred cities in China - many are unfamiliar or almost unknown to an audience outside the country itself. The objective of the series is to offer to second-tier cities, about which little information may be available in English, the opportunity to make themselves better known to an international audience.

Already published in the series are titles on the cities of Kunshan, Nanjing, Changzhou, Nantong, Qingdao, and Suzhou, along with one book that is slightly different in style - From Made in Guangdong to Created in Guangdong - covering the six main cities of the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong Province in the south of the country. The idea is that the series will grow at around five or six books per year. In the pipeline this year or next are a further book on the water cities of Jiangsu Province near Shanghai, and...

Unique in concept, the books are written from a western perspective by a selection of different western authors who are invited to visit the featured cities and spend time living and working there. But they are more than simply travelogues - every one of the cities has thousands of years of history behind it, and its own story to tell - of culture, of history, of warfare, of industry, of commerce, of religion, and most of all, of the people who have made and who make each city what it is today. The Cities of China series attempts to identify what is unique to each city, and to present its story in a style that will appeal to a western audience.

Published in both their original English and Chinese, the books will be of interest to both a general and a specialist readership - individuals who have a general interest in learning more about China, and students, academics, journalists, and business people who have a professional or academic interest in learning more about the individual cities featured. As a whole, the series will provide a fascinating compendium of information about a whole range of Chinese cities.
