The series Graded Readers for Chinese Language Learners is composed of 50 books, divided into three subseries, namely folktales, literary stories and historical stories, corresponding to Levels 1-3 respectively. The businessman Lü Buwei met a man called Yiren in Handan, capital of Zhao. Yiren was a prince of Qin, who was held hostage in Handan and lived a poor life there. Lü Buwei saw an opportunity to make a deal with Yiren. He decided to invest all his money on Yiren to help him become the king of Qin.
Yiren’s grandfather, King Zhaoxiang of Qin, had more than 20 sons. Yiren’s father also had over 20 sons, and Yiren was the second. The chances seemed very slim for Yiren, who didn’t matter at all among all these sons and grandsons, to become the king of Qin. However, Lü Buwei succeeded in making Yiren the king and he himself the prime minister.
Ms. Chen Xianchun is a professor at Beijing Language and Culture University who has engaged in the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language since 1975, equipped with rich Chinese teaching experience. Professor Chen has made profound research into the teaching of Chinese reading and has published, in addition to more than 20 academic papers, many monographs and textbooks such as Teaching Reading and Psychology, Typical Characters and Events in Chinese Culture, A Primer on Modern Chinese Reading, An Intensive Chinese Course, and Read This Way.

商人吕不韦，在赵国都城邯郸，看见一个人。这个人叫异人，当时生活穷困，可他是秦国的王孙，在邯郸做人质。吕不韦忽然发现这是一个商机，可以用这个异人来做一笔大买卖。他准备投入全部家产，帮助异人成为秦王。
异人的祖父秦昭襄王有20多个儿子。异人的父亲是秦王的第二个儿子，他也有20多个儿子。异人在秦王的这么多子孙中一点儿都不重要，他怎么可能成为秦王呢？可是，吕不韦真的使异人成了秦王，他自己也当了秦国的丞相。
陈贤纯，北京语言大学教授，1975年开始从事对外汉语教学，具有丰富的汉语教学经验，并对汉语阅读教学有深入研究，发表论文20多篇，出版《外语阅读教学与心理学》《中国文化中的典型人物与事件》《现代汉语阅读入门》《汉语强化教程》《这样阅读》等多部专著与教材。
