Li Yansheng was born in May 1943 in Yuanan, Shanxi Province, although his ancestral home is in Zhongshan County, Guangdong Province. He studied art in the middle school attached to Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and in the Traditional Chinese Painting Department of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts and did postgraduate work in the traditional Chinese Paintings Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing.
