A Practical English-Chinese Dictionary has been compiled based on the experience gained in our teaching of Chinese as a foreign language both in China and abroad. It is designed especially for students of Chinese who have an elementary to intermediate knowledge of the language.
This dictionary contains a rich stock of more than 10.000 words commonly used in daily life, work and study, and in social activities. Vocabulary words in the fields of politics, economics, science and technology, etc. are confined to those employed in everyday communication. Also included are those English words which may not be regarded as high frequency words, but whose Chinese equivalents appear a good deal in relation to China or in communications between native and non-native speakers of Chinese.
This dictionary differs from those intended for Chinese learners of English in two respects:
1. Definitions for each entry are not only given in Chinese characters, but also marked with the part of speech and the form in pinyin (the Chinese phonetic alphabet). so that users can find the exact Chinese meaning of an English word they need, and at the same time know its syntactic function and its pronunciation, thus saving them the trouble of consulting other dictionaries.
2. The Chinese definitions of the word entries or expressions are followed by adequate examples of usage in the form of either a phrase or a complete sentence. The Chinese translations of these examples, also marked with pinyin, are concise, standard, and practical, embodying the principal usage of the given definition in each case and thus enabling the learners to compare, comprehend, imitate and use with ease.
This dictionary is characterized by practicality. It provides effectual assistance for the users in the form of definition, transcription, translation, and composition.
