Chinese painting has a long history and an excellent tradition. In the field of fine arts it has a style of its own, delightful and pleasing. In recent years, as cultural exchange between China and foreign countries has developed and visitors and tourists from abroad are on the increase, universal interest in Chinese painting has steadily deepened. However, it is regrettable that too little work has been done to introduce Chinese painting to the Western world while those have a liking for it have a strong desire to understand more about it. It is to meet this need that we have the pleasure of bring out this album. In compiling this album we have had in view the aim of satisfying the demand among lovers of Chinese painting for references that will enable them to enjoy and learn the skill of Chinese- ink painting. Our selection is limited to small-size scroll-painting, album-painting and fan-painting. This album contains paintings of figures, mountains and water, flowers, birds, four-footed animals, worms and fish. Various techniques are used, including fine brushwork with attention to detail, broad strokes for essence and spirit, and water-ink. Mr. Huang Miaozi, the well-known fine arts theorist, has contributed to this album a highly valuable article treating of the characteristics of Chinese art and giving a brief introduction to each painting and the painter. Also available in hardcover.
