Language Through Literature: An Advancedof Contemporary Chinese Short-Short Stories is specially designed for students at the intermediate high and advanced levels. It includes twelve short-short stories which have been published inthe past ten years. Each short-short story has approximately 1,200 to 1,800 characters. The stories fall under six thematic units: jobs, interests, marriage, the countryside, friends, and education. Each unit has two lessons. Each lesson contains a short-short story, a vocabulary list, a section with important expressions and grammatical structures, and a group of exercises.
Here is certainly one of the best textbooks available on the market to improve one’s reading skills reading Chinese literature. Each of the 12 lessons is composed of a short-short story (about 1500 characters) in both simplified and traditional Chinese, along with a vocabulary list with, for each word, one or several examples of use. A whole section is dedicated to grammatical words and phrases, without explanation but containing several examples of use in context. Exercises aim at checking the good understanding of the text, the vocabulary and the grammatical words. One audio CD comes with the book.
