This is the second edition of Popular Chinese Expressions. The first edition was published in 2000 and surprisingly well received. Many readers asked:' Why don't categorize all phrases by feature topics' concerning face, since the fundamental philosophy of this book is about' face'. So the editors undertook a major restructuring of the original book. This book is classified all the phrases into four categories: saving your own face, giving other people face, failing to retain your own face, and denying other people face. Under each category, it is further divided the topics into three subtitles: stronger than others, equal to others and weaker than others. The classification is not perfect; since many phrases can be used under more than one title editors put them under what they believe was the most suitable one.
Published by Sinolingua, this book is dedicated to popular Chinese expressions (and not chengyu!). This book can definitely help whoever wishes to speak colloquial Chinese, Chinese as spoken in the street. Each idiom or expression is shown in context in a bilingual dialogue, and then explained in a bilingual 'context' section. An MP3 comes with the book.
