This volume contains eight plays, six of which are translated into English and introduced to the western world for the first time. In addition to ample annotation, an introduction is written for each play, enabling readers to approach and appreciate these ancient masterpieces-the forerunners of present-day Peking opera.
When the Mongolians conquered China and founded the Yuan dynasty in the 13th century, they brought with them the art of theatre, which was to flourish during the following centuries, along with the vernacular literature (especially with novels during the Ming dynasty). This book contains eight plays in English, which are all masterpieces of the Yuan dynasty, along with several reproductions of old pictures. This vernacular literature is also a wonderful way to learn about Chinese traditional society and about the daily life in Imperial China.
