I2002， the Food and Agriculture Organizatioof the United Nations （FAO） launched its Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems （GIAHS） Initiative with the goal of establishing a conservationetwork and achieving international recognitiofor GIAHS to protect its associated landscapes， biodiversity， knowledge and culture， thus laying a foundatiofor its sustainable management. According to the definitioby the FAO， GIAHS refers to 'remarkable land use systems and landscapes which are rich iglobally significant biological diversity evolving from the co-adaptatioof a community with its environment and its needs and aspirations for sustainable development.' Compared to the World Cultural and Natural Heritage designated by the United Nations Educational， Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO), the development history of GIAHS is still relatively short. However， GIAHS has developed rapidly and vigorously worldwide because of its innovative ideas and with the strong support from member countries including China. Up till August 2018, the FAO has designated 52 GIAHS i21 countries across the globe.
