A freelance writer and translator, Kobayashi Sayuri was born in Nagano County, Japan. After graduation, she worked for the national headquarters of the Japan-China Friendship Association (Kanda, Tokyo, now is a juridical association) as an editor of the organ newspaper Japan and Chine. Since September 2000, she worked as the Japanese cultural and educational expert for the People's China Magazine Press of the China International Publishing Group for five years. Later, she became a freelancer based in Beijing, writing about all aspects of the Chinese society, culture and life for Japanese media.
This book contains 60 articles from the columns and essays that the author wrote between 2005 and the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games for Japanese magazines, China's Japanese-language supplements and her personal blog. The book is a documentation of what she's seen, heard and thought about as a Japanese living in Beijing and a reflection of her efforts to understand the vast and profound China.
