Fresco art, an important component of the monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism, can be found on the walls of the main halls, entrance halls and Buddha halls of the monasteries in Tibet.
The frescoes feature a rich variety of subject matter and flamboyant colors, and in the main portray the supreme Buddhist masters, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in Tibetan Buddhism. The frescoes also reflect the historical characters and stories of Tibetan society and the work and lives of Tibetan people.
King Songtsan Gampo unified Tubo and married Nepalese Princess Bhrikuti and Tang Dynasty (618-907) Han Chinese Princess Wencheng. The two princesses brought large numbers of Buddhist sutras and architectural techniques, which played an active role in the cultural development of Tibet. From then on, the painting art of Tibet entered a period of prosperous development. The Frescoes of Tibet are of extremely high value in the study of Tibetan history and the history of Tibetan art.
The Tibetan frescoes absorb both the artistic characteristics of frescoes from the Chinese hinterland and the foreign artistic elite of Nepal and India. Most of them adopt the techniques of symmetry, plane spread and downward cavalier perspective.
Since they mainly use local mineral materials and are suited to the climate of Tibet,
Tibetan frescoes can survive for several hundred years. Some of them have kept their color
for some 1,000 years.
