The 'Short -Term Chinese Series' is adapted to various types of short-term Chinese training course. According to past experience, the composition of students in short-Term Chinese classes is quite complex. Because of the differences of students' professions and status, ages, purposes and requirements of study, original Chinese levels and period of study, textbooks and teaching methods often need to vary accordingly. Therefore, flexibility is required for teaching materials of short-term Chinese course. The compilers of this series have indeed taken this problem into full consideration. Besides the characteristics of up-to-date style and scientific nature that many other textbooks also possess, the compilers laid emphasis on studying how to make the series adapt to the special needs of 'short-Term' and 'multi-types'. The series are divided into 10 volumes which include 16 books. Before compilation, the compilers worked out a general design of the whole series, and made an overall arrangement of language points to be taught in each book, based on the Criterion and Program of Chinese Levels compiled by the Chinese Society of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. They designed textbooks for two different courses for beginners. They also designed many books of varied levels of two different courses for students who have studied Chinese before. After studying the highest levels of the textbooks, students may reach the third level of the Criterion and Program of Chinese Levels. Each textbook can stand alone. But all the textbooks connect with each other at the same time. In vertical connection, they are different courses. Thus, teachers may make their choices for the convenience of the specific students in teaching. They may teach both courses and make them complement each other. They may also teach only one course, making the progress more speedy. Teachers may choose any book of the series as a starting point for teaching according to the student's level. For this reason, this series appears more flexible and adaptable.
