Romance of the Western Bower, also translated as Romance of the West Chamber, is one of the most famous Chinese dramatic works. It was written by the Yuan Dynasty playwright Wang Shifu, and set during the Tang Dynasty. Known as 'China's most popular love comedy,' it is the story of a young couple consummating their love without parental approval, and has been seen both as a 'lover's bible' and 'potentially lethal,' as readers were in danger of pining away under its influence.
Wang Shifu, courtesy name of Wang Dexin (1250-1337?), was a successful Chinese playwright of the Yuan Dynasty. He was born in Dadu (present-day Beijing), the capital of the Mongol-Yuan Dynasty. There are 14 plays attributed to Wang and only three are extant. His Romance of Western Bower (known as The Story of the Western Wing, Xi Xiang Ji) is one of the most famous Chinese plays and is still popular today. It is an amplified Zaju, a then popular theatrical form. Xu Yuanchong (born April 18, 1921 in Jiangxi, China) is a translator of Chinese ancient poets into English and French. Xu took foreign language studies at Tsinghua University after he studied abroad. And after that, he became a professor in English and French. Since 1983 to now, he is professor at Peking University.
《西厢记》是中国戏曲“四大古典名剧”之一，也是元杂剧中最受人称道的一部，流传极广，对后来中国小说、戏剧的创作有很大影响。剧本讲述张生与崔莺莺偶遇一见钟情，不顾封建礼教禁锢，大胆追求婚姻自主，几百年来深深打动了无数中国青年男女的心。张生、崔莺莺、红娘等人物也走进中国世俗生活，成为经典的艺术形象。许译《西厢记》以金圣叹评点本为中文底本，全译。

王实甫（1260年－1336年），名德信，大都（今北京）人。元代杂剧（元曲）作家。中国著名剧作《西厢记》的作者。所作杂剧中名目可考的有13种。王实甫还有少量散曲流传：有小令1首，套曲3种（其中有一残套），散见于《中原音韵》、《雍熙乐府》、《北宫词纪》和《九宫大成》等书中。 许渊冲，生于1921年，北京大学教授，数十年来致力于中国传统文化经典的研究翻译和传播，在国内外出版中英法文作品一百余部，并提出了中国学派的文学翻译理论。1994年，企鹅出版公司出版了许渊冲教授翻译的《中国不朽诗歌三百首》。瑞典诺贝尔文学奖评委，华克维斯特院士称他的翻译是“伟大的中国传统文学的样本”。2010年许教授获得了中国翻译协会颁发的“中国翻译文化终身成就奖”。
